Overview

A remote, part-time, 12-month fellowship offering a $10,000 stipend for mid-career professionals working on technology and democracy.

Eligibility

The fellowship is intended for mid-career professionals working on technology and democracy.Journalists, researchers, lawyers and public policy professionals may apply.Applicants should have a demonstrated interest or background in tech policy, media or a related field.Applications are accepted from candidates worldwide, including those outside the United States and those not authorized to work in the United States.Applicants should be prepared to work remotely as independent contractors and produce public-interest reporting or analysis.Applicants from the Global Majority and underrepresented communities in media are encouraged to apply.

Who Can Apply

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Applicants with a demonstrated background or interest in tech policy, media or related fields.
  • Candidates from around the world, including applicants from the Global Majority and underrepresented communities in media.
  • Applicants who can identify a clear area of focus and demonstrate how their work will inform the public and decision-makers.
  • Applicants able to produce high-quality, public-interest work during the fellowship and work remotely as independent contractors.

Technology policy, technology and democracy, digital rights, artificial intelligence governance, technology regulation, media, public policy, technology and society, and related fields.

Selection Criteria

Applicants are assessed on:

  • Strong background or expertise in a specific technology policy area, issue or geography, or in technology’s impact on democracy or society.
  • A clear proposed area of focus and explanation of why the applicant is well suited to cover it.
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in tech policy, media or a related field.
  • Commitment to producing high-quality, public-interest work.
  • Publicly accessible and clearly attributed published work, including at least one submission written in English.
  • Writing samples generally published within the past three years; social media posts, unpublished work, class assignments and dissertations are not accepted.
  • Evidence of the applicant’s own command of English.
  • Applications may be assessed through an online interview for selected candidates.

  • Links to prior publications that are publicly accessible online and clearly attributed to the applicant.
  • Two professional references.
  • At least one submitted publication should be written in English; translated work may also be shared.
  • Submitted work must be open access and cannot consist solely of pre-print or unpublished research papers.
