Who Can Apply
To be eligible, applicants must:
- International applicants applying for study at a Japanese university before coming to Japan.
- Applicants for research student placements in master’s, doctorate or professional degree programs, or as graduate international research students.
- Applicants for regular undergraduate study, including a preparatory year designated by MEXT.
- Applicants applying through Embassy Recommendation via a Japanese embassy or consulate in their country.
- Applicants considered through University Recommendation by the relevant University of Tokyo graduate school.
Selection Criteria
Applicants are assessed on:
- Embassy Recommendation applicants are initially screened by the Japanese embassy or consulate in the applicant’s country.
- Undergraduate applicants are assessed through academic examinations in the primary screening held in their home country and academic achievement during the MEXT preparatory course.
- For undergraduate applicants, the university they may enter is determined by MEXT in consultation with the university and preparatory school, taking into account the proposed major and the university’s receiving capacity.
- University Recommendation candidates are selected and recommended by the University of Tokyo to MEXT.
- Some University of Tokyo graduate schools may apply their own deadlines and procedures.
How to Apply
Applications must be submitted before coming to Japan. For Embassy Recommendation, apply directly through the Japanese embassy or consulate in the applicant’s country and follow its country-specific procedures. Research applicants who pass the embassy’s first screening and seek provisional acceptance from the University of Tokyo must follow the university’s contact instructions and must not contact faculty members directly. For University Recommendation, contact the relevant University of Tokyo graduate school because application periods and procedures vary by department.
