- Undergraduate and graduate students meeting the credit, GPA, enrollment, and financial-need requirements of the relevant award
- Students participating in approved John Jay College or CUNY study-abroad programs
- Eligibility for external awards may be limited to U.S. citizens, nationals, permanent residents, DACA recipients, Pell Grant recipients, or dependents of active-duty service members, depending on the program

- JJC Study-Abroad Scholarship: up to $1,000
- Jeremy Travis Scholarship: minimum $2,500, based on program cost and financial need
- Myrna Dolores Ilari Bain Scholarship: $1,200
- JJC Rising Star Fellowship: $3,000 per fellowship, with up to three fellowships awarded annually
- JJC Student Travel Program: maximum contribution of $1,500 for an individual application, limited to airfare-related costs for study-abroad students
- Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship: up to $5,000
- Fund for Education Abroad: $1,000 to $5,000 for a semester and up to $10,000 for an academic year
- Gilman-McCain Scholarship: $5,000
- Freeman-ASIA: up to $3,000 for summer, $5,000 for a semester, and $7,000 for an academic or calendar year
- The Watanabe Study Abroad Scholarship: up to the full cost of attendance for the study-abroad program
- HI USA Explore the World Travel Scholarship: $2,000 to $3,000
- Bridging Scholarship: $2,500 or $4,000, depending on the length of the study program
Selection Criteria
Applicants are assessed on:
- Minimum GPA and completed-credit requirements vary by scholarship
- Participation in an approved study-abroad or international studies program
- Financial need, where required, may be determined through the FAFSA
- The Myrna Dolores Ilari Bain Scholarship considers academic work related to African Diaspora studies, gender studies, sociology, English, international criminal justice, history, anthropology, or social justice
- The Jeremy Travis Scholarship supports undergraduate students with financial need, including first-generation students, students from underrepresented minority groups, LGBTQ students, students with disabilities, and students pursuing law enforcement-related paths
- The Fund for Education Abroad gives preference to students underrepresented in study abroad, including minority, community college, and first-generation students
- Some external awards require U.S. citizenship, permanent residence, DACA status, a Pell Grant, or other specific conditions
Required Documents
- Study-abroad program budget
- 500-word essay describing the study-abroad program, financial need, and how the experience will contribute to the applicant’s studies
- Completed FAFSA where financial need is required
- Official transcript from a previous institution for transfer students applying to the JJC Student Travel Program
- Documentation of an offer to participate in the relevant study-abroad program, internship, or research assistantship for the JJC Rising Star Fellowship

How to Apply
John Jay students should access the John Jay Study-Abroad Scholarship portal using their John Jay email credentials and password. Applicants should also consult the Study Abroad and Financial Aid offices about program costs and whether existing financial aid can be used. External scholarships require applications through their respective providers.
