Who Can Apply

To be eligible, applicants must:

• Former holders of DAAD research grants or study scholarships funded for more than six months by the Federal Foreign Office or through a programme co-financed with Federal Foreign Office funds.
• Former East German scholarship holders who studied in Germany for at least one year.
• Applicants who have not lived in Germany for at least three years.
• Applicants with a research or working project coordinated with a cooperation partner in Germany.
• Applicants with adequate German-language knowledge for the proposed research project.

Fields of Study

Research or professional working projects; no specific field restrictions are stated.

Value

• Monthly payment of €2,000 for assistant teachers, assistant professors and lecturers.
• Monthly payment of €2,150 for professors.
• Monthly payments for former scholarship holders working outside the science sector, calculated according to their qualifications.
• Travel allowance, unless covered by the home country or another funding source.
• Possible subsidy for justified additional costs related to a disability or chronic illness, subject to application and review.
• Funding for one to three months, with the funding beginning in 2027.

Selection Criteria

Applicants are assessed on:

• Academic achievements and, where applicable, publications, documented in the curriculum vitae and publication list.
• A convincing and well-planned research or work project.
• For projects outside the science sector, the sustainable effect on the applicant’s professional activity.
• Potential multiplier effects, such as planned publications.
• Contribution of the stay to existing cooperation.
• Equal-opportunity considerations.

Required Documents

• Online application form.
• Full curriculum vitae in tabular form, up to three pages.
• List of published academic publications, if applicable.
• Comprehensive statement about the research or working project, up to ten pages.
• Time schedule and itinerary listing host institutions or cooperation partners.
• Confirmation from the academic host in Germany referring to the project and guaranteeing a workplace at the host institute.
• German or English translations of documents submitted in another language.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted online through the DAAD portal. Applicants must register in the portal, complete the online application form, prepare and translate documents where necessary, scan paper documents as PDFs, upload the application form and supporting documents, and submit the completed application online.

Application Deadline

15 October 2026 for the selection date in spring 2027 and funding between 1 May and 30 September 2027; 14 May 2027 for the selection date in summer 2027 and funding between 1 October 2027 and 31 January 2028.
