Selection Criteria

Applicants are assessed on:

  • Innovative proposals related to the Getty Research Institute or Getty Villa annual research theme, the African American Art History Initiative, or the Provenance Research Project.
  • For the 2026–2027 year, proposals should explore provenance and adjacent research areas, including the history of collecting, the study of the art market, or broader questions concerning ownership of art objects.
  • Predoctoral applicants must have advanced to candidacy by the application deadline and expect to complete their dissertations during the fellowship period.
