Who Can Apply

  • Must be a US citizen
  • Must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited US university, with a minimum GPA of 3.7
  • Must have completed undergraduate studies after April 2024
  • Applicants already pursuing or holding a British degree are not eligible
  • Applications must be endorsed by the President, Provost, or Academic Dean of the applicant’s US undergraduate institution

Fields of Study

Open to all academic disciplines — Marshall Scholars may pursue master’s degree programmes, or up to three years for doctoral study, at any UK university and in any field.

  • Research and travel costs within the UK
  • Transatlantic airfare to and from the UK
  • Spousal support where applicable

Up to 50 Scholarships are awarded annually across eight US regions. Scholars may hold a one-year award (12 months, non-extendable) or a two-year award (22 months); some two-year and PhD scholars may be eligible for limited third-year extensions.

Selection Criteria

Candidates are assessed against three equally weighted criteria:

  • Academic merit — undergraduate academic performance
  • Leadership potential — demonstrated leadership capabilities
  • Ambassadorial potential — capacity to improve UK–US understanding

The programme seeks candidates with the potential to excel as scholars, as leaders, and as contributors to improved UK–US understanding.

Applicants and recommenders: 29 September 2026, 5:00pm (in the endorsing institution’s time zone)

Institution endorsement and submission: 1 October 2026, 5:00pm (in the endorsing institution’s time zone)

Applications must be submitted through your US undergraduate institution and endorsed by its President, Provost, or Academic Dean — there is no direct-to-Commission application route. Contact your institution’s fellowships office to begin the process well before the deadline.
